Flixster App for Blackberry

February 11, 2010 Leave a comment
I just tried the Flixster App for my Blackberry 8900.  It was a fun tool.  My family and I went out of town and I thought to myself, shoulda brought my laptop so I could watch a movie. I searched on Blackberry’s app store and got this based on a customer’s recommendation.  Downloaded it on Edge and watched a few previews.  Warning: it does buffer and you may not get the full effect the preview is meant to give.  The previews have always buffered on EDGE, but on wi-fi, they streamed well.  We don’t have 3G out here, nor on our trip, so you may have a better experience if you have 3G.
You can find: Box Office hits, Theater locations, Upcoming movies, Movies on DVD for the current month and last month, plus do a search, which I haven’t tried yet.

Happy movie hunting!

Stream Video from Your Cell Phone

Qik allows you to share videos live from your Blackberry and iPhone.  For WordPress bloggers, you can use this app to easily embed videos on your blog.  You can also automatically upload your videos to Facebook and Twitter to share what your seeing with all your friends or business partners.

One of the top Qikkers listed is Demi Moore (mrskutcher).  I thought it was awesome to be able to watch Demi’s unorchestrated live video while the director was filming on a movie set.

I was very excited to find this app and tried to use it on my lunch break, but alas, it requires WiFi or 3G.  Oh, well.  3G is not yet available in my area, so my live recordings have to be more planned out.  Hard to catch sporadic events with all this planning.  Hmm…I can record live from the coffee shop, my house, and Pizza Hut in another town.  Maybe next year if my wireless carrier decides or can afford to upgrade to 3G.

Click here to check the list on their site to see if your phone is supported by Quik.

Facebook Blackberry App

My Blackberry didn’t come with this already installed, so I downloaded the app from Facebook’s website direct to my Blackberry Curve.  You only have to log in once and your main screen shows Status updates and News Feeds from all your friends. You can view photo albums, send private messages, find new friends, and add your photos direct from your Blackberry.  Having Facebook on your phone is much easier than getting email updates every time someone makes a comment.

The only thing I haven’t been able to do is view the videos because I haven’t set up my phone for streaming video.

Happy Facebooking!

“Baby Go!” Blackberry App

My 3 year old played with Baby Go’s free application for about 20 minutes.  It taught him a few new words with the Christmas game and got him giggling as he pressed mutliple buttons on my phone at the same time.

What you do is press the different keys on your Blackberry and depending on which game your playing, the letters, numbers, or words will be voiced plus pictures pop up on the screen.  If you upgrade to the full version, you can have access to more games.

Contributors to this game are welcome at www.zeebu.com/create.  This is a great way to make it your own!  To do this, you’d have to create .wav sound files for letters and numbers.  They’ll give you credit on their website, as well.

Have fun!

WordPress Blackberry App

December 28, 2009 Leave a comment

I have the free beta version of the WordPress Blackberry App, and it works great!  Just the other day, I had an extra 15 minutes to write before watching the movie, 2012.  You never know when you get that bright idea for a topic.  Now, you have the option to work on it while you’re away from your computer.  For those of us who like to blog, we would view this as fitting some fun into life versus being a workaholic.

The WordPress app keeps you logged in and keeps track of your blogs on the main screen.  Choose which blog to work on from here, then you have your menu: Posts, Pages, Comments, Options (photo size, user name/password info), and Refresh.  From Posts, you can create and publish a new post, as well as add video and some photos (don’t add too many photos at once or you’ll have to redo it; it might be a pain, but try uploading them one by one).  You can also add your tags and categories direct from your Blackberry.

Trying to fit in something else to your busy schedule may seem like a headache until you find an app like this that actually makes your life easier.  I’m surprised how many people I run into that say they have a business doing marketing, but don’t realize there are apps like Worpress’s that can keep your customers updated and coming back to your site.

Happy Blogging!

SparkRecipes Blackberry App

December 18, 2009 Leave a comment

It was a late day after work, kids crying in the background and two teenagers soon to be hungry.  Then a bright idea hit me!  My Blackberry might have an app for recipes.  I usually use the desktop on days like this to find a recipe, but the internet was down that day, so I went to the Blackberry App Store on my phone.

Voila! SparkRecipes popped up on the first page as a FREE app.  It boasts of almost 200,000 recipes and sells you on homecooking versus eating out.  You can do a word search, but you can also search by the categories below.  If you find any favorites, you can save those, too.

I typed in Ground Beef and got 200 results.  This app came in handy.  It beat fighting over the computer with my 13 year old, and I found the recipes in the app faster to look up than on my normal sites like www.cooks.com.  Plus, being able to save the recipes on my Blackberry allows me to have the ingredients next time I forget my shopping list.  Which does happen often.  Below are some of your choices, aside from doing a search:

Cuisine (Asian, Italian, Mexican, French, German, Indian, Spanish)

Occasion (Brunch, Party, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)

Dietary Needs (Lactose Free, Gluten Free, Vegetarian, Sugar Free, etc.)

Course (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, etc.)

Main Category (Poultry, Beef/Pork, Fish, Appetizers, etc.)

Happy Recipe Hunting!

Podtrapper For Blackberries

December 12, 2009 Leave a comment

Podtrapper for Blackberries is a nifty app. It allows you to automatically download podcasts, including videos, from any website that allows you to. Simply add to playlist and either search for podcasts or go directly to that URL/website and Podtrapper will set the downloads up for you. I am currently using Edge, so I set my automatic downloads to run at night when I know I’ll be home with access to wi-fi. Wi-fi makes the downloading smoother and faster.
